Thanks to the staff at Walden School in Louisville for coming over to Maker13 for a fun Friday afternoon of competition and making. Walden’s teachers were assigned the task of designing, building, and testing a wind powered vehicle using only a pinewood derby car kit, cloth, cardboard, string, a wooden dowel, and metal wire. They had two hours in which to use the given materials to cut the pinewood block into the desired shape using the bandsaw, using the drill press to place their mast (wooden dowel rod), sewing machines to make the sail, sanders, drills, staple guns, snips, and many other tools in the shop. We would say they were not only up to the task, but they also came up with some really creative designs. There was everything from a cardboard wedge with eyes to a full on sail boat.
